Damon Hill’s F1 Career – In his own Words

In his own words, British racing driver Damon Hill looks back at his Formula One career, in which he won the World Championship in 1996.

After making his debut in the sport in 1992, Hill quickly established himself as a leading figure in Formula One. He recorded his first victory at the 1994 British Grand Prix, and went on to win a further eight races over the course of his career.

Despite never winning the championship before 1996, Hill had come close on several occasions; most notably in 1994, when he lost out to Michael Schumacher by just one point. However, he finally realized his dream in 1996, clinching the title with a dramatic victory at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Hill’s Story: In my own words, I am Damon Hill and I was born on September 17, 1960 in London, England. My father Graham was a very successful racing driver who won two World Championships before I was even born. From an early age I had an interest in cars and racing, but it wasn’t until I was 12 that I got behind the wheel of a race car for the first time.

I started my professional racing career in 1992 when I joined the Williams team. My debut race was the Spanish Grand Prix and I finished seventh. By 1994 I had won my first race – the British Grand Prix – and that year I narrowly missed out on winning the World Championship by just one point.

1996 was my breakout year. I won eight races – including a dramatic victory at the Japanese Grand Prix to clinch the title – and finally realized my dream of becoming a World Champion. After leaving Williams at the end of 1997, I raced for Jordan and then BAR before retiring from Formula One in 1999.

I have now been involved in various aspects of motorsport since retiring from driving. In 2006 I became President of The British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), and more recently I have been working as a commentator for Sky Sports’ coverage of Formula One races.
