The Duke–UNC basketball rivalry is a college basketball rivalry between the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team of Duke University and the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The two institutions are only 8 miles (13 km) apart and have been bitter rivals in many sports for over a century.

The intensity of the rivalry has been fueled by the proximity of the two campuses, as well as the long history and tradition of both schools. The universities have been near each other geographically since 1892, when UNC-Chapel Hill moved to its current location just 8 miles (13 km) from Duke’s campus in Durham. In 1924, Duke and UNC formed the Tobacco Road Sports Association (TRSA), a joint venture between the two schools to promote their athletics programs. The TRSA lasted for 40 years before it was dissolved in 1964.

The basketball rivalry began in 1920, when Duke defeated UNC 29–25 in Durham. Since then, the two teams have met 264 times, making it the fourth most-played college basketball series in history. They have met at least once every season since 1935, making it one of the oldest rivalries in college basketball. Duke holds a 151–113 lead in the all-time series, but UNC leads 62–57 in games played at neutral sites and 31–26 in games played at UNC’s home court, Carmichael Auditorium.

The winner of the annual series is awarded the Victory Bell, which is painted blue on one side and white on the other to represent each school’s colors. In 2010, ESPN ranked the rivalry as first among all rivalries in college basketball.
