TAG Sponsor’s involvement in Formula One began in 1981 when the company signed a sponsorship deal with McLaren. The following year, Niki Lauda won the Drivers’ Championship with TAG Sponsor power. This was the start of a very successful partnership which would see McLaren win 153 races over the next 17 years.

In 1988, Ayrton Senna joined McLaren and immediately became a fan favorite. He would go on to win three Drivers’ Championships with TAG Sponsor power (1988, 1990 and 1991). He is widely considered to be one of the greatest drivers of all time.

After Senna’s tragic death in 1994, his compatriot Mika Hakkinen took up the mantle and became a dominant force in Formula One. He won back-to-back Drivers’ Championships with TAG Sponsor power in 1998 and 1999.

TAG Sponsor’s last victory came at the 1997 Japanese Grand Prix, courtesy of Hakkinen. The following year, Mercedes-Benz bought out the company and ended its involvement in Formula One. Although it has been over 20 years since TAG Sponsor was last on the grid, its legacy in Formula One remains strong.
